The Power of Sleep

Honestly, you need to get some sleep. It's very important. It's actually essential to your well-being, helping you stay mentally and physically fit. Sleep is your body's way of refreshing itself, so you’re always prepared for what comes your way.

As an adult, you should aim to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. The problem is, many Canadians (like you?) don’t get nearly that much. In fact, more than a third of Canadians adults don't get enough sleep. Why is this a problem? Because sleep really is essential to your well-being. The consequences of poor sleep are far more serious than feeling drowsy and worn out the next day.

“The silent sleep loss epidemic is one of the greatest public health challenges we face in the 21st century,” says Matthew Walker, a sleep expert you should really check out.

The less you sleep, the more prone you are to health issues like cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Science shows that sleep deprivation plays a significant role in aging, making your cells act older than they really are. Literally every major organ in your body is enhanced by sleep. That’s some pretty heavy stuff.

The quality of the sleep you get also affects your mental health. A lack of sleep can lead to depression and anxiety, and even affects your ability to form memories. Pulling an all-night to study for an exam is actually one of the worst things you can do to prepare. This may all sound negative, but there is a plus side! There are simple, natural things you can do to improve your quality of sleep. Better sleep makes you happier, more creative and more focused.

Getting a great night’s sleep starts with your sleep ritual - the things you do every night before bed. To have an effective sleep ritual, you need to get really serious about sleep. Bring it to the top of your list. We’ll be sharing tips and tricks in future posts, so make sure you come back if you liked this one.
